5 Minutes with…Samantha McKnight
Samantha McKnight, Vice President Client Solutions, CIBTvisas, winner of Mentor of the Year Award 2024
Congratulations on your award! Can you tell us what this recognition means to you?
Personal recognition always holds a different weight when compared to a team award or something on behalf of your business. It shows that the work you do and the efforts you take, make a difference. This one, holds a special place. I’ve been involved in the ITM Mentoring Scheme from the beginning. Helping those in our industry grow and be the best version of themselves is one of the best ways to give back.
What inspired you to pursue excellence in your specific field within the business travel industry?
I’ve worked in a number of sectors within the business travel industry. Each move wasn’t necessarily about the company or the sector but about the role. Having a role that allowed me to have an impact and make a difference was always paramount. The longer I am in the industry, the more important this becomes. Whether that difference comes from product development, change management or growing and developing a team, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.
Your mentoring has made a significant impact. What do you think are the key qualities of an effective mentor?
I think these vary depending on what the mentee is looking for. In general I think the following are key:
• Relevant expertise or knowledge
• Willingness to share skills, knowledge and expertise
• Approachable
• Provides guidance and constructive feedback
• Active listeners
• Be positive and enthusiastic
One of the really important factors for me is the mentor themself needs to be a lifelong learner. When this happens the mentor-mentee relationship is two-way and you can learn just as much from your mentee.
Can you share a memorable experience from your mentoring journey?
Seeing my mentee in action, doing something they would never have considered doing previously.
What advice would you give to others in the business travel industry looking to make a meaningful difference?
It all starts with knowing and understanding what’s important to you. What gets you up in the morning and keeps you striving forward? If you keep that as your “why” and at the centre of your journey, you won’t go far wrong.
